Final Fantasy XIII’s Lightning to Have a New Direction, Teased by Square Enix

Square Enix has has opened a new website for Final Fantasy XIII's protagonist Lightning. While details are scarce, the website has the phrase "A Storm Gathers" and shows a bunch of clouds with the occasional lightning peppering it.

In the website itself, the following statement can be read.

FINAL FANTASY XIII TEAM TO PRESENT NEW DIRECTION FOR THE SAGA OF KEY CHARACTER, LIGHTNING

The "Lightning Saga" that started with the release of FINAL FANTASY XIII, has achieved a cumulative shipment of over 9.6 million units; and in May 2012 FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 was brought to conclusion with the add-on content entitled "Lightning's Story: Requiem of the Goddess".

Key members of the FINAL FANTASY XIII development team including the Producer, Director and Art Director, are in preparations to present new information about the direction of Lightning's story. This presentation will take place at an event in Tokyo to celebrate FINAL FANTASY 25th Anniversary, on 1st September 2012.

So, I take it this is an announcement for a new game or DLC concerning Lightning, no? Now, the question is, is Lightning that well-liked that this is even warranted? I guess we'll know on September 1.

Of course, seeing as September 1 is the 25th Anniversary of Final Fantasy, don't be surprised if more announcements regarding the franchise are made aside from Lightning's "new direction."
