EA's Patrick Soderlund, executive vice president of EA Games, thinks the publisher does "not do ports" at all anymore and instead develops games that are ideal for each platform.
This statement was delivered when Soderlund was asked if they have any ports lined up for the Wii U (via CVG).
Well I would say EA doesn't make ports at all anymore. We try to make games that are ideal for each platform as much as possible. Obviously for PS3 and Xbox 360 the systems are similar, so we cross-develop. But we will always try to take an approach about what is unique for that platform. Wii U has many unique capabilities so you have to embrace the unique elements of the platform otherwise there's not much point doing it at all. There is no general rule for developing a game. We custom tailor for each one, so everything is a bit chaotic, but it's worth it.
While I don't think that EA is the "evil empire" that most gamers think and want them to be, it's a bit of a stretch to state that they're not doing ports anymore, no? Now that I think about it, they're known Wii U games like Madden '13 and Mass Effect 3 for Wii U are just that — ports!
Do you have a problem with ports? If you're a budding Wii U owner, is this a concern for you or would you rather have as many games released for the platform as possible?
