EA: We are Very Careful that Medal of Honor & Battlefield Stay Differentiated

July 16, 2012 by Alex Co

EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau talks about how they both Battlefield and Medal of Honor can co-exist.

EA has never been shy in claiming that they're actively seeking to dethrone Activision's Call of Duty on the FPS throne. They made very good ground in last year's Battlefield 3. This year, DICE's Battlefield brand is taking a break and EA has appointed Danger Close to developed Medal of Honor Warfighter in its stead.

In saying that, EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau states that they're using a "sequencing" strategy to keep things as fresh and different as they can.

We are very careful that Battlefield and Medal of Honor stay differentiated…There is an inefficiency to having two different brands coming out alternating like that, there is some upside.  You don't have the annualized, sequel fatigue.  With Medal of Honor we tried to embrace that the game is real.  The multiplayer is different than Battlefield.  We're trying to use a sequencing strategy to keep it as fresh and different as possible.

If you didn't know, EA has stated that they're planning on alternating each year between the Battlefield and Medal of Honor franchise to tr and slowly take down Call of Duty. Unarguably, the publisher has made a very good first step with last year's Battlefield 3.

The big question now is if Medal of Honor Warfighter can carry that momentum? It's also worth noting that both games are running on the DICE-developed Frostbite 2 engine. So that could either be a good or bad thing depending on if you liked the engine's gunplay.

It's also been leaked by EA's Origin platform that Warfighter will include a Battlefield 4 beta for those who pre-order it, so that alone should help sales a bit, no?

Do you think EA's idea will work or are both Medal of Honor and Battlefield destined to be second banana forever? Come to think of it, are you still excited to play military shooters?
