Niantic Removes Pokemon From Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ahead Of WWII Anniversary

August 9, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

Niantic has responded to requests to remove Pokemon from certain areas in the world.

‘s operators at Niantic have promised to remove any Pokemon from sensitive locations around the world, such as cemeteries and memorials. The move was prompted after many players wandered into these locations in order to catch rare Pokemon while making complete nuisances of themselves.

According to the Associated Press, Niantic removed Pokestops, gyms and any of the Pokemon from locations like Arlington National Cemetery, the US Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial.

The sites were cleared by the request of the institutions and not the result of any pro-active moves by Niantic itself. It’s fortunate that Niantic complied with the request of the Japanese institution as the anniversary of the World War II bombing is set to take place this week. The last thing anyone would want is for a few errant Pokemon players to yell out the names of rare Pokemon they’ve caught during the proceedings.

It bears repeating that anyone playing the game should be mindful of their surroundings.
