Epic Mickey 2: Kinect, New Places, and Old Inspiration

May 8, 2012 by Andrew Kent

We get a little more insight about the development and details of Epic Mickey 2.

Recently the design director for Epic Mickey 2, Chase Jones, did an interview with G4TV. He talked about quite a bit but there were a few things of note that you the readers might find interesting.

For one, as we all know Epic Mickey 2 will be multiplatform. Chase said as much in the interview but he went on to talk a bit about the XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

It’s ironic because, I mean yes, the game looks gorgeous on the PS3 and the Xbox, and you can see so much more detail in all those art assets that are pulled into the game, but yet the game play on the Wii is still so satisfying because that’s how a lot of us played the first game.

We’re not showing it here just yet, but we’re also supporting PlayStation Move so maybe you can get that same feel fromt he Wii by playing that way

Chase was then asked about Kinect support. He said that while they looked at having Kinect support it just wasn’t an option for the game.

We looked at it, but again it’s like when you’re holding the controller, what mechanics are going to branch over to Kinect and I know it has voice commands, but we really didn’t want people to be yelling at their Xbox while they played this.

It’s quite unfortunate, in my opinion, that they would think this. In his quote it seems like Chase was more functioning on the voice commands rather than the motion aspect. I think Epic Mickey 2 for the Kinect would seem only logical if they’re getting both the Wii and PlayStation move in on the action. Then again though the Kinect can be fickle at times.

Moving on though, a lot of old and new things are coming to Epic Mickey. Chase said that Frontierland, from Walt Disney World, would be making an appearance. He didn’t mention any other places that might be making an appearance though. What he did say was that the team did not want to recycle old levels from the first game.

We are going to come back to some of the same areas, but this isn’t a game where we just say ‘hey, we’re going to reuse the levels from last time and bring it back again.’

Speaking of old places, Chase even got a chance to look inside the Disney Vault. A collection of very old artifacts from Disney’s past. No, they aren’t storing Walt’s cryogenically frozen corpse in their. Conspiracy theorists…

Chase was looking for inspiration from these old works of art for the Epic Mickey game. He seemed to enjoy being in the vault, especially taking a look at the old painting of Disney World that hung behind Walt Disney in The Wonderful World of Disney. Apparently when lit up with a black light the lights glow. Some times these devs are so lucky.
