RimWorld Makes Its Steam Debut Later This Month

July 6, 2016 by Dennis Patrick

RimWorld officially launches as a Steam Early Access title on July 15th.

Thanks to a press release that was sent over earlier today, we’re getting word that RimWorld will finally make its grand debut on Steam later this month. This comes after its successful Kickstarter campaign funded the development of Tynan Sylvester’s sci-fi colony simulator.

RimWorld was first featured on Kickstarter where the development team published their campaign within 2013. After a month, the campaign successfully closed with RimWorld earning over $260,000 from just under 10,000 backers who wished to see this video game fully developed.

Now, a few years after the Kickstarter campaign ended, we’re getting word that RimWorld will be released as a Steam Early Access title later this month, July 15, 2016. This will also come alongside the release of their Alpha 14 update.

For those of you who might not be aware, RimWorld is a story driven sci-fi colony simulator. Essentially, players are tasked with building, growing, and maintaining life within their colony. However, there will be an AI storyteller that will choose random events to give players a challenge.

According to the Kickstarter campaign, there are three AI storytellers in which are described below.

  • Cassandra Classic aims to create a rising curve of tension over the course of the game. Early on, the most dangerous thing she’ll do is send a psychotic squirrel after you. Later on, bands of scavengers will arrive. In the late game, look forward to combined-arms attacks from mercenaries mixed with lightning storms and crop blights. If you want a traditional tension and difficulty curve, go with Cassandra.
  • Phoebe Friendly is for the player who just wants to build and watch a colony grow. She’ll occasionally create minor disasters, but nothing that would threaten the existence of the colony. If you want a more relaxing game about growth and success, choose Phoebe.
  • Randy Random follows no rules. He may give you some amazing stroke of luck, like a trader selling an advanced weapon for a low price or a group of helpful immigrants, followed by a near-unbeatable pirate attack combined with an electrical fire. If you think losing is fun, you might want to try Randy.
