Microsoft announce free Xbox App Weekend

April 18, 2012 by Mat Growcott

If you’ve stared longingly at the App page on your 360, knowing full well that THERE’S NO WAY ON EARTH to find the BBC iPlayer without a Gold account, Microsoft is offering the gift of charity.

So it's come to this; we should have seen it coming really, considering that more people are using their Xbox 360 consoles for watching missed TV and movies than they are using them for gaming, but I didn't think it would come so soon. This weekend, Microsoft are offering silver level Live members the oppurtunity, because it IS an oppurtunity, to view all the apps available to gold members without paying a penny.

That's right, the likes of 4OD, the ITV player, Netflix, Youtube, Lovefilm and the BBC iPlayer will finally be free to use for one weekend. It's a little bit like the last five minutes of A Christmas Carol, isn't it? Keep in mind that it's just the apps that seem to be being unlocked, not, as you'd expect, the full gold service.

The US will also get their apps unlocked, getting access to things like HBO, Vevo, MSN and ESPN. I think I speak for everybody on Earth, nay the Universe, when I swallow my pride and thank Microsoft for all their chairty.
