EA Wishes They Were Involved with Minecraft

March 27, 2012 by Andrew Kent

EA claims they could help bring stuff to Minecraft’s table, and learn from Mojang as well.

Oh EA, you were in talks with Mojang and those were most likely about purchasing the company. However, Notch wanted Mojang to be indie through and through. Now you're back, from outer space, saying that Mojang could use Origin's help.

“It’s the difficulty of managing Minecraft once you’ve already got it – such as installing and maintaining mods – that Origin could help with.” Chief Creative Director Rich Hilleman of EA said in an interview with Gamasutra.

Hilleman went on to say that dealing with Minecraft is a big job and Notch will probably not get there by himself. He even claims to have advised the guys at Origin to take on Minecraft, get this, for free.

“I don’t know if Notch cares – in fact, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t. What I’ve told the guys who run Origin for us is that we should do it for free, because as you can see my vision of that business, that’s not where the money comes from anyway. ”

Taking into account the lack of success Origin has been having, and the lack of Minecraft on Steam, bringing Minecraft would give Origin a possible advantage on the field. This would be especially true if they take out the hassle of installing mods to Minecraft. Yeah, that's so not where the business comes from Hilleman.

Anyways, Mojang has no plans on bringing Minecraft to either Steam or Origin which is sort of unfortunate. Minecraft has been out for ages now and there is so much that players want from the game but Notch either refuses to incorporate (which he has a right to) or just does not have the manpower for. I would really love to see better mod support though.
