Rockstar has explained how they made the relationship between GTA 6’s Jason and Lucia optional.

In an interview with IGN, Rockstar development head Rob Nelson said this:
The narrative is structured in such a way that the circumstances they find themselves in require them to stay together for most of the story and work together. At the very least, they will get through most things as partners in crime.
When Rob was asked if growing the relationship has any gameplay benefits, he said:
Not a particular gameplay benefit that I can think of really. They will remain partners in crime. You will always have the benefit of working together and having each other’s back – whether they’re romantically close or not doesn’t change that.
They will still work together. It’s really about what you want for them, their story, and how it plays out. Whether you’ve nurtured the relationship or not will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out.
When GTA 6 details first leaked, leaned into the idea of star-crossed lovers. But Rob implies they could just split apart at the end. It’s interesting to think about how they will emotionally affect their players with this.
