Activision could just go ahead and reboot the Halo franchise from scratch.

According to Rebs Gaming, Activision just dropped two of their product pitches for the IP. Sledgehammer Games was working on concepts and mechanics prototypes for a multiplayer game and a story campaign.
Sledgehammer used Infinity Ward’s engine for these prototypes. They were also planning a soft reboot that would stick to canon and just dispense with Halo Infinite’s story.
So if Sledgehammer Games disposed of all of this, what is their plan now? Rebs says this:
My source says it’s too early to know for sure because nothing is set in stone, but they have heard that Activision is considering a full reboot and making a Master Chief origin story.
This means we aren’t getting a direct Halo Infinite sequel, and at least some of Halo’s story will be rebooted.
Rebs also believes that Sledgehammer will lead development for the next Halo, and they may use the same Infinity Ward engine.
While Halo fans are surely weary of 343’s soft and hard reboots, this may be the best way for Activision to make the best Halo game they can.
