A new twist has emerged regarding the PS5 liquid metal issue.
The PS5 has been designed to use liquid metal instead of thermal paste to dissipate heat from its APU to its heatsink. Unfortunately, the original PS5 SKUs had an issue where the thermal paste could leak out after prolonged use, causing unrepairable damage.
The newer smaller PS5s have been redesigned to fix this issue, but modyfikatorcasper has identified a new issue. He claims that even if the console was only positioned horizontally, the liquid metal can still leak.
In fact, unique issues occurred with this specific CFI-1116 unit. The liquid metal created an alloy crust and left a massive dry spot on top of the console’s APU. While the APU is in pristine condition, the heatsink is permanently scarred.
So far, this issue has not been seen in newer PS5 models, but gamers who are looking to save money should avoid buying an original model PS5 based on this.
