Rumor: Eidos Montreal Cancelled An Almost Completed Game After 7 Years, Leading To Yesterday’s Layoffs

April 1, 2026 by Ryan Parreno

If it’s true, this is a serious setback for Eidos Montreal.

A new rumor points to serious problems inside Eidos Montreal.

Yesterday, the studio revealed that they were laying off 124 employees, and studio head David Anfossi was also leaving the company. Insider Gaming claims to know the reasons behind these layoffs.

Eidos Montreal just cancelled Wildlands, an ambitious game that they worked on for seven years. This was a 3rd person action adventure with a fantasy theme.

Going by the codename P11, Wildlands had you playing River, one of a group of a teenagers with magic powers called Spiritbounds.

The game was almost finished but it had been a struggle for the studio. In the last seven years, they went through four game engines, internal conflicts over the story, and a budget that ballooned to several hundred million dollars.

Wildlands cost Eidos Montreal cancelling some of their other projects, including a Deus Ex game. Whether fans reading this will now conclude that they should have moved forward with Deus Ex or not, we need to understand this was a serious setback for Eidos Montreal.
