Rockstar has just fixed what is described as an integer overflow problem in Grand Theft Auto Online: A Safehouse in the Hills.

GTAGFX shared this information on Twitter:

Players who had earned more than the 32-bit signed integer limit, specifically $2,147,483,647 (2.14 billion) now are able to add the Three Comma Club trophy to their mansion.

Rockstar published the patch notes for Title Update 1.72, which says this:

Fixed several issues that resulted in Mansion trophies not unlocking when their requirements were met

Hold On, What Is An Integer Overflow Problem?

Simple English Wikipedia shares this description of integer overflow:

Integer overflow occurs in computers, when the number which is stored becomes larger than the capacity of the memory it is stored in. The most likely result is that the number will reset to 0 and start over.

We can share another example of this outside of the world of Grand Theft Auto, but still in the realm of video games. Super Mario Bros. for the Famicom/NES actually has a very famous integer overflow issue.

To quote 티어 (chatterbox):

Super Mario Bros. allows players to earn up to 127 lives, but earning more than that gives a Game Over due to a signed integer overflow.

티어 (chatterbox) gave this explanation as he posted a tool-assisted speedrun where he tried to set the world record to reach Mario’s 128th life the fastest. If you’re curious about it, you can watch it here.

Nuro Citrix of RockstarIntel also gave his explanation of this bug:

GTA Online uses a 32-bit signed integer limit for certain values, most notably the total income stat, capping it at $2,147,483,647

Reaching this amount causes a bug with the following mansion trophies:

– Nine Figures

– Half a Bill

– Three Comma Club

He then corroborated this issue was fixed recently:

This has now been fixed for GTA Online players that have exceeded the 32-bit signed integer limit.

Having a total income of over $2,147,483,647 will no longer stop you from getting these trophies.

Was This The Giant Game-Breaking Bug?

As for right now, it’s not clear that this was the giant game-breaking bug we reported on yesterday.

It is possible that there were actually several bugs that just happened to hit several players at the same time. Since it’s only been a week, we may not have heard of players who only had the integer overflow bug, even if they were also there.

In any case, this was something that only Rockstar could fix. So it’s a good thing that it’s been addressed now.
