Red Dead Redemption On Xbox Is A Better Deal Than You Think

December 4, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

The bug with the free upgrade obfuscates how good a deal Xbox gamers got.

It looks like Xbox gamers get the best deal for Red Dead Redemption – if you can get it.

Yesterday, Rockstar clarified that if you had Red Dead Redemption for Xbox 360, you should be able to upgrade it to the new Xbox Series X|S version.

This should be the case regardless if you bought it for the Xbox 360 itself, or if you got the Xbox 360/Xbox One version that was sold for the Xbox One.

There is a technical issue now that isn’t allowing all Xbox owners to do the upgrade, but they are definitely eligible for this entitlement.

While we wait for Rockstar and Microsoft to fix the issue for everyone, though, the community started finding out how far this deal goes for them.

FriendlyAaron shared their experience with the game on Twitter:

I’ve seen people say you can’t buy the Xbox 360 edition anymore on the Xbox Store, or say that you can only get it with the “RDR1 & RDR2 bundle”

But it seems to be included with the current gen RDR1 release.

I don’t know if it was like this yesterday.

Basically

When you buy RDR1 for Xbox Series, they give you the Xbox 360 version as well

Useful if you want to play Multiplayer or play on Xbox One or Xbox 360.

Videotechuk then brought up an interesting piece of information:

Pretty sure MP doesn’t even connect to R* servers. It’s a local save file saved to the console iirc. Shouldn’t ever shut down.

He then deferred to Darealbandicoot, who clarified that the files for multiplayer are stored on the game console you’re playing it on.

It is possible to play multiplayer offline via LAN, but Microsoft’s / Rockstar’s servers are still needed to do it online.

How Did Xbox Gamers Luck Out On This One?

This of course brings together some things that turned out right. For one, Take-Two was generous enough to offer an upgrade path to every console platform.

But on top of that, Microsoft’s own backwards compatibility program allowed Xbox 360 players to carry over their copy of the game to Xbox One. And of course, Take-Two had Double Eleven make this new version of the game in the first place.

Sony did their own thing to benefit their fans. Before this enhanced version, they got Red Dead Redemption on the PlayStation 4 run at 60 FPS on PlayStation 5. Ironically, that means they have the least meaningful upgrade out of everyone.

In any case, if you have an Xbox 360 copy of the game, you got Rockstar’s guarantee of your entitlement. So you should save your money and wait it out for when the free upgrade goes live for everyone.
