Dan Houser has once again spoken out against AI.

The Grand Theft Auto creator appeared on the Virgin Radio show The Chris Evans Breakfast Show for a general interview. Chris asked him if he thinks that the AI boom will lead to the world-changing revolution that its proponents seem to believe it will.

Dan said this:

As far as I understand it, I personally don’t think it will, because I think AI is eventually going to eat itself.

Because as I understand it – which is really superficial understanding – the models scour the internet for information, but the internet’s going to get more and more full of information made by the models, so it’s sort of like when we fed cows with cows and got mad cow disease.

I can’t see how the information gets better, if they’re already running out of data. It will do some tasks brilliantly, but it’s not going to do every task brilliantly.

Dan Is Speaking On AI From Experience

As Dan has revealed in an earlier interview, he actually is ‘dabbling’ in AI right now. But in his experience it is not that useful.

In both of these interviews, the topic came up because his current big project, A Better Paradise, is about a rogue AI that becomes a threat to humanity.

So maybe Dan isn’t really the person people should look to be an advocate for AI technology. Regardless, no one can say that he’s just criticizing it because he has an agenda against it.

Why The Video Game Industry Is ‘Dabbling’ In AI Anyway

If Dan Houser, who freely admits he isn’t the person who came up with the technical innovations in Rockstar Games, is skeptical about AI, you know that the other game companies are also skeptical.

But you can rest assured these companies will ‘dabble’ and experiment with it, if they haven’t incorporated it yet anyway.

Will AI Change The History Of Video Games?

Dan does acknowledge that he found several uses for it. We think there will eventually come a point where the industry figures out the extent that they will be using AI and incorporate it into the game development process.

This sort of thing does happen every time a new tech innovation comes along. We only have to look back at the transition to HD game development during the PS360 era to understand that some things were changing, whether they like it or not.

Our optimistic view is that the industry agrees to adopt the parts that make development easier and faster, and they give up on the parts that tries to replace creative works.
