Today Sony announced in a press release that they’ve sold 40 million units worldwide as of May 22nd. Software sales for the console have sold 270.9 million copies (retail and digital), according to their statement.
“We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time,” said CEO Andrew House. “We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services.”
They also took the time to remark on the success of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, claiming that the Naughty Dog title sold more than 2.7 million units in the span of one week.
Sony closed by expressing their excitement about expanding their portfolio with Final Fantasy XV, Nioh, Ryu ga Gotoku 6, Gran Turismo SPORT, Gravity Rush 2 and The Last Guardian. The inclusion of that last title in Sony’s statement is almost a guarantee that this long awaited video game is still being released.
