Ken Levine Not Fretting Over BioShock Infinite’s Crowded Launch Month

March 14, 2012 by Josh Harmon

"If it’s a great game I think it will do great. If it’s not a great game, it won’t do great. It’s pretty simple with BioShock."

BioShock Infinite's October 16 release date puts it right in the middle of the crowded holiday gaming season, but Irrational Games head Ken Levine isn't worried one bit, as the game's unique nature will help it stand out from other releases.

"We don't have the problem that, say, a Battlefield had last year – and I don't think they viewed it as a problem, they viewed it as an opportunity – of going up in a head-to-head," Levine told Eurogamer during a recent interview.

"It's hard to categorize BioShock for people in their heads. It has its own vibe. It's a strange and different game. In the same way Portal didn't compete directly with anything. So you don't worry so much about, oh my god, we're competing directly with this, what are we going to do?"

October and November are traditionally the busiest months for high profile game releases, and 2012 is shaping up to be no exception. Infinite will be launching weeks before Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Assassin's Creed III hit stores, with Resident Evil 6 following close behind.

That schedule's only going to get more crowded as other big titles nail down release dates, with heavy hitters like Halo 4, Call of Duty, and The Last of Us all likely to fall into the same window.
