Shacknews Produces One Hour Documentary About Borderlands 4’s Launch

October 23, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

It’s a nice little feature about the trip to Kairos.

Borderlands 4 has received a special feature.

Gearbox made the official announcement on Twitter:

Borderlands 4 is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Shacknews joined us in our studio to hear about the history of the Borderlands franchise and the journey up through the moment that Borderlands 4 launched.

Creative Director Graeme Timmins also posted about the feature:

Please check out this incredible documentary @shacknews built around Borderlands and Borderlands 4.

It’s an amazing look back at the franchise and also provides a lot of insight on how we approached BL4. Big thanks to the @shacknews team for building such an amazing video!

Shacknews’ YouTube documentary is called 24 ‘Til Launch: The Making of Borderlands 4.

Editor David Craddock provided this description on their website:

Seven years ago, we came up with an idea: What if we visited a studio 24 hours before launch to learn about a game’s development and what goes into sending it out into the world? The result was 24 ‘Til Launch, and the first installment was Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.

Today we’re back with a new documentary: 24 ‘Til Launch: The Making of Borderlands 4. Head of Video Greg Burke and I visited Gearbox the day before Borderlands 4 launched to learn about the game’s development, the history of Gearbox Software, and what work remained in the hours before launch.

The documentary starts with Gearbox staff talking about the start of the studio, and how they made their way to Borderlands.

They then talk about the decisions they made in producing Borderlands 4, and the video ends with the actual last few hours before the game launches.

It was interesting for Randy Pitchford and other Gearbox staff to take a seat and retell the stories of the studio’s and franchise’s origins. Some of these details have been previously shared in interviews on print, but some of them are no longer available to view today.

It’s also interesting to look back on now that we know that Borderlands 4 reached the biggest launch in the franchise’s history. As it turns out, even at this point in their careers, Gearbox is never entirely sure how fans will take to the decisions they made.

We also noticed that Gearbox openly confirmed that they made changes from Borderlands 3 after fans let their voices heard on what they liked and hated.

You can watch the documentary below.
