Gearbox Is Working On A Fix For Borderlands 4’s Lost Loot Machines

October 20, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

The lost loot system currently doesn’t work for its intended function – to get back the Legendaries you left behind.

Gearbox’s devs have once again pledged to make a fix to Borderlands 4 upon the community’s request.

Creative director Graeme Timmins made this promise yesterday on Twitter:

Improvements to Lost Loot are coming in the next patch.

As it turns out, Gearbox has known about this issue for a while. We found a support ticket from last month asking about the same issue. Customer support rep Templar gave this answer:

This is currently planned to be addressed in a future update.

What Is The Lost Loot System?

Gearbox added a new system so that you don’t necessarily have to forget about any Legendaries you left behind just because you couldn’t carry any more items in your inventory.

And there’s nothing particularly special about this system either. As soon as you find a Lost Loot Machine, you can start picking up any lost loot that you left behind.

But there are some limitations, and as you may have already guessed, some issues with Lost Loot.

What Are The Intended Limitations Of Lost Loot Machines?

While you can pick up items you left behind in Lost Loot, you still have to deal with the same fundamental issue. If you don’t have enough inventory space, you still won’t be able to retrieve every item you got back.

On top of that, Lost Loot Machines also have limited slots. So it may not be possible to get literally every item you left behind. You can upgrade Lost Loot Machines with their own SDU Tokens, just like the inventory slots you carry.

When you see the retrieved items in the machine, you can choose to trash or take them. You still have to go to a vending machine to sell them or a bank branch to store them.

Lastly, any items you drop on your own will not show up in the machine. So you should be proactive about managing your own inventory.

What Are The Unintended Limitations Of Lost Loot Machines?

As you have already seen, players are complaining about how the machines actually miss the Legendaries you leave behind. This misses the point of the system entirely, so Gearbox definitely needs to fix that as soon as possible.

But there are other issues on top of that. YouTuber Splicy Spleen did some investigating on his own and found these other concerns:

  • There are duplication glitches
  • The machines take some time before it will retrieve your items
  • Rebooting the game does not rush the in-game timer to retrieve items
  • It sometimes returns items from prior saves
  • It really does not prioritize Legendaries and high value loot

For now, if you need the Lost Loot Machine to retrieve an item for you that you can’t easily return to, Spicy Spleen suggests you literally just wait out the in-game timer. He didn’t give a timeframe but he suggested watching a show on Netflix, so it could take a while.
