Grand Theft Auto 6 Could Go Past $ 100 In Mexico If Law Vs Violent Video Games Passes

October 20, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

That’s US dollars, not Mexican pesos.

There may be reason to worry that Grand Theft Auto 6 will get even pricier than $ 100 – at least south of the US border.

Mexico has a new law proposing that violent video games could be taxed an additional 8 %. The law has already passed the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Mexico’s bicameral legislature.

The politicians who proposed this rule cited studies that found a relationship between violent video games and higher levels of aggression from adolescent players.

The Finer Details

Global financial services company KPMG reviewed the law this proposal comes from, Mexico’s 2026 Economic Package. You can read their summary below:

  • The reform proposes to apply an 8% excise tax rate on the sale of video games with violent explicit or adult content, in “physical format,” when the sale is made in Mexico on B2C transactions, in addition to the 16% VAT. Imports are excluded from this rule.
  • The tax also would apply on the access, or download of video games with violent, explicit, or adult content, in addition to the 16% VAT. If these are provided by foreign providers and platforms, these would need to register and obtain an RFC and comply with similar obligations as the current digital service rules for VAT.
  • In terms of new fiscal responsibilities, providers and platforms facilitating the sale of such video games would be required to:
  • Identify which video games are considered subject to the tax (violence classification criterion)
  • Periodically report to the SAT the revenues obtained from these sales
  • Issue tax receipts detailing the tax paid, separating it from other indirect taxes such as VAT
  • Non-compliance would result in the temporary suspension of internet access to the platform (kill switch).

Is Rockstar Really Going To Be Concerned About This?

On the face of it, some fans could conclude that Mexico is not as big a market as the US. So Rockstar won’t really care that much if this law passes.

But this could really be a situation where Rockstar takes action. Mexico is second only to Cuba as the largest market for Grand Theft Auto video games in South America.

There is a sizable Grand Theft Auto community in Mexico that would absolutely object to this law. But in this situation, they have to lobby to their own politicians instead of Rockstar to avert it.

And this game’s community may be dwarfed by the greater concerns of an entire nation looking for new tax revenues. We should also acknowledge here that Rockstar has yet to announce prices for Grand Theft Auto 6, in Mexico or the rest of the world.

The $ 100 price point is based on predictions from financial analysts. These analysts are advising investors, not console gamers. They can absolutely be wrong, as the stock market often is. But this prediction is not being made out of bias for what games they like, or by random.

None of this has been decided yet. But Mexican Grand Theft Auto gamers definitely need to be paying attention on this now, and they may have to take action.
