Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have shared exciting updates for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Nintendo shared a new trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on their Nintendo Today app. Now, we have to explain that Nintendo recently pushed an update to the app so that the public couldn’t easily and natively extract assets from its posts.
Because of this, the public can’t confirm for sure the resolution and framerate that is being shown in the app. We’re sure you’ve seen a lot of people claiming that the game is now running at 4K 60FPS, but we can’t really substantiate that.
We do know that Nintendo promised a free Switch 2 update for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and they specifically mentioned these features:
- Visuals: Optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs for improved image quality.
- Frame rate: Improved for smoother movement on Nintendo Switch 2.
These are the exact patch notes for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Ver. 4.0.0, which was published a few days earlier from their promised release date of June 5, 2025.
There are no apparent improvements in this patch for Switch players, so why did Nintendo push out this update early? The answer is also found on this page, as Nintendo says this:
All players must be using the same version of the software to play together. Please make sure you have the same update version as the person you are playing with.
So Switch players will also need to update their version of the game to ensure they can play with Switch 2 players. While we can definitely expect a nightmare of server loads for game updates when the console launches, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company clearly wanted Switch players to do their updates now.
While we’re certain to get performance tests at the console’s launch, there are some interesting details that we may have to confirm later. For example, are these improvements possible because of DLSS? If that’s the case, than sadly there are technical impediments to bringing these performance improvements to the original Switch.
Speaking of which, as we see how well the 2022 game is running in a 2025 console, the question inevitably has to come up: was Pokémon Scarlet and Violet originally planned to release at the same time as the Switch 2? Rumors have gone around that the Switch 2’s launch was delayed, mostly so that Nintendo could make sufficient stock to meet demand.
If this was the case, than The Pokémon Company decided to take a reputational hit just to get a new Pokémon game out. If the Switch 2 had launched with this game, say, a year or two earlier, gamers would have already known that they really meant to have an improved Switch 2 version alongside the Switch version.
But that definitely falls into the realm of speculation here. For now, you can enjoy the best and smallest clip we could find for this new trailer off of YouTube.
