Gears of War fans are soon going to see a movie adaptation. This has been in the works for a few years now. Netflix received the rights to bring out a film based on the hit IP. However, details have been scarce, and it’s only now that we’re getting word that the production has hit a new milestone with a director.
Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we’re discovering that David Leitch will take the helm as the director behind Gears of War. If you’re unfamiliar with the name alone, David has a few notable credits as a director. Over the years, David has directed movies that include Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, and, most recently, the 2024 release of The Fall Guy. So now, he will be stepping into the video game universe and hopefully bringing out a successful adaptation.
Again, details are scarce right now. We know that Jon Spaihts is writing the script for the movie. Their previous credits include the latest Dune movies, Doctor Strange, and Prometheus. That said, we’ll have to wait and see just how this movie plans to adapt the storyline, whether it will steer closer to the first game, and whether we’ll go further back in the lore of this IP.
While Gears of War is set in a period after the infamous E-Day, we know that an upcoming game is coming our way that focuses on the actual E-Day. Unfortunately, we’re not yet given any insight on when we’ll get our hands on Gears of War: E-Day, which should help showcase the horrors humanity endured when the Locust Horde emerges underground. So, it will be interesting to see if the movie touches on this time period.
At any rate, with the success we’re seeing lately with video game franchise adaptations, there are likely more than a few fans who are cautiously optimistic. We’ll have to sit tight and wait to learn more about this movie, who is attached to the cast, and how closely it plans to stick with the source material.
