Halo is still one of Microsoft’s big franchises. It’s also one of the few exclusives remaining on PC and Xbox console platforms. Now, how long that will remain the case is anyone’s guess. However, looking back at the lengthy history of the IP, it turns out that there was at one point some consideration of bringing out a remastered edition for Halo 3.
Halo 3 is among the more cherished installments of the entire franchise. It’s a game that just about every Xbox 360 owner was playing at the time. Likewise, it’s still highly regarded and enjoyed through the Halo: The Master Chief Collection. But if you look back at the series’ first two installments, both had an anniversary edition release, enhancing the visuals.
Today, thanks to Dexerto, we’re discovering that art director Darren Bacon spoke about a time at 343 Industries, now known as Halo Studios when the team was considering a similar treatment to Halo 3. This came during a podcast episode of the VideoGamer Podcast. During the interview, Darren revealed that there was some interest in the team revisiting Halo 3.
Apparently, there was interest in releasing a remastered edition for a particular anniversary event. That never got off the ground because resources were just too scarce. At the time, developers within the studio were either working on post-launch support for Halo 5 or starting production for what is now known as Halo Infinite.
Perhaps we’ll see some kind of remastered edition released in the future. Unfortunately, there’s no telling right now how high of a priority this is for the studio. We’re not even sure when we’ll even get our first look at the next chapter of this franchise. Of course, with Microsoft bringing their exclusives over to once rival platforms, we might first see past Halo games get a new release.
