Cloud Streaming Has Arrived on The PlayStation Portal

November 20, 2024 by Andrew McKay

Does it beat just using your phone and a Bluetooth controller yet?

The PlayStation Portal is Sony’s newest handheld gaming device. While it might not be a conventional mobile device, it does technically fit the bill. Well today it’s getting a new feature which might make the PlayStation Portal a slightly better proposition – cloud streaming.

As spotted over at VGC, Sony shared on Twitter that it is bringing cloud streaming to the PlayStation Portal today. Now if you aren’t familiar with the device you would be forgiven for asking, “Isn’t that what it already did?”. To answer that hypothetical question, No. The device in it’s most basic form is merely an extension of your existing PlayStation. Streaming games that are playing on the device.

A new PlayStation Portal update releases later today, featuring:

In it’s new format the device will now be able to play games that you don’t have loaded on your PS5. However, there is a caveat. This feature will be limited to PlayStation Plus Premium members who will stream one of the 120 PS5 games available. It’s worth mentioning that this service is still in Beta, so it may not be available in all regions. It might also not be a perfect experience.

The games will be streamed at up to 1080p/60fps but will vary based on individual game performance and the quality of the connection to your network. Users will be able to make use of all of the DualSense controller features, however that will only be when they are supposed to occur in game.

The Beta will not be available for accounts that belong to a minor. Also, the games that are available will be limited to PS5 games, PS4 and PS3 are not supported.
