Pokemon Yellow released for iTunes, doesn’t work

February 21, 2012 by Mat Growcott

One of the best selling paid apps on iTunes this week has been Pokemon Yellow, sans any pesky involvement from anybody actually involved in the original game.

People have taken to iTunes in their thousands so that they can buy a little slice of their childhood – Pokemon Yellow. House of Anime, a rather dubious sounding company that have also released games based on Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh, brought this app to iTunes in the hopes of making a quick buck and I think it's fair to say that they've managed it, despite the game not actually working past the main menu.

Apple have since removed the app, although the damage has already been done. It rapidly climbed to the top of the charts, not difficult to believe considering the sheer amount of game available there for a dollar, and then got negative review after negative review as people downloaded and realised that it didn't actually work. This apparently came as a shock for the "developer" who issued an apology and promised a new build was on its way.

The game has since been removed, probably after extensive coverage from the press, and the developer's website seems to have been shut down as well. It seems that there's a real thirst for classic RPGs on portable devices and given how much this must have sold, expect someone else to try it on in the not so distant future.
