Ed Boon is one of the gaming industry’s names that might be easily recognizable. The individual has worked on the iconic Mortal Kombat franchise since its start and continues to see it released into the marketplace. They also saw some positive reception from their Injustice franchise, which pits DC Comics characters against each other in a similar fighting game setup.
Right now, the developers, including Ed Boon at NetherRealm Studios, are supporting the Mortal Kombat 1 release. However, a recent interview featuring Ed Boon featured a misquote that Ed took to X and alerted followers of what was actually stated. Comicbook.com noted in their interview with the developer that NetherRealm Studios has been working on their next video game release for over three years. However, that’s not the case.
Ed Boon noted that they have not started working on their next game. Instead, Ed noted that the studio had decided on their next video game project three years ago. But right now, the team is still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come.
It would seem that the team’s next project is set in stone, but when they get to work on this game is a mystery. It’s speculated that the next game will be another installment in the Injustice franchise, but again, that’s just speculation. Instead, we’ll have to be okay with new content and updates coming to Mortal Kombat 1 from the folks at NetherRealm Studios.
For those unaware, Mortal Kombat 1 is a bit of a soft reboot for the franchise. Developers provided a new timeline that swaps the characters we’ve come to know and love from this IP. New relationships were formed along with their pathways. The game was released in September 2023 and can be purchased on the PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch platforms.
