Rumor: PlayStation Exclusive Metal Gear Solid Remake Still In The Works

January 8, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

Sony and Konami should update us on this title if its real.

A Metal Gear Solid remake is reportedly on the way, but under some surprising conditions.

As reported by Eurogamer, a Spanish language website called Areajugones has the details on this remake. Areajugones have proven themselves before by sharing a rumor about God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla before it was officially revealed in the 2023 The Game Awards.

The remake has reportedly been in production for several years now. At this point the title is being developed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. So it isn’t coming to Windows, Xbox, or even PlayStation 4.

The main thing we need to know is that Metal Gear Solid Delta is definitely the priority for Konami at this moment. However, they are still keeping the lights on for this remake as well.

Originally released in 1999, Metal Gear Solid is a landmark title in the history of video games. While most fans definitely played this game on the PlayStation and associate the game with that console, even this original release also made it to Windows.

Perhaps the exclusivity can be explained by another Konami title that has been made PlayStation exclusive: Castlevania Requiem. This title is exclusive to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and packages an improved version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, as well as Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.

In their marketing for this title, Konami stated that players can “relive the timeless classics like never before thanks to Konami’s partnership with SIE Worldwide Studios to create these high-quality ports.”

So, this remake may have been produced or planned at around the same time as Castlevania Requiem, and involved Sony making a deal to party or wholly produce this remake themselves. It’s possible that they just fronted the money as Konami’s client as well.

This should also bring to mind another remake that Sony greenlit as a PlayStation exclusive: Knights of the Old Republic.  Sony and Embracer have not shared any official updates on the status of this title, but rumors are rampant that production stalled after Sony was unhappy with the vertical slice that developer Aspyr showed the company.

If Jason Schreier is to be believed, the game was taken off of Aspyr’s hands, to its parent company under Embracer, Saber Interactive. Schreier says at least two employees at Saber are still working on Knights of the Old Republic.

While it is certainly not the case with every project, we should be mindful that extended development time for a game could be a red flag that the project has stalled. In particular, if the developers are not giving periodic assurances, they may be mum on the project for a reason.

In any case, there are no rumors of issues with this Metal Gear Solid remake for now. Hopefully Sony or Konami can share an update on this soon.
