Sega Executive Says Many Companies Want To Purchase Them

November 15, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Could Sega soon merge with another company?

It’s not surprising when we hear about a studio being acquired. That has been a trend for a little while now. Sony and Microsoft have been acquiring studios, and it was just Microsoft recently that developed a massive purchase. Microsoft made the purchase to acquire Activision Blizzard. Now, this was no small feat. It cost them an enormous amount of money. After dealing with regulators, the deal finally went through. But through these regulators and court hearings, tiny bits of information surfaced from behind closed doors. One of those dealt with Sega. A company that has been around for ages and even offered a console competitor for a time.

Thanks to these internal documents that surfaced online, we found that Microsoft was keen on making a few other notable purchases. One of those included Sega, a massive company in its own right with a long history of iconic franchises.

But this wouldn’t be the case very long as this deal never came to fruition. That hasn’t stopped some fans wondering if there could be a case sometime soon that would see Microsoft again pick back up their interest in acquiring the comapny. Fortunately, for fans who want to see Sega avoid mergers, that likely won’t happen.

At the least, it’s not likely to happen, according to Sega Chief Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi. The Sega executive recently spoke with CNBC, who asked Shuji Utsumi about the recent document leak. According to Utsumi, several companies are interested in acquiring them, and they feel honored. Utsumi went on to say that they have several attractive IPs and potentials, but the company has a strong owner, and he doesn’t feel that this kind of transaction will happen.

Instead, it’s noted that Sega is interested in acquiring some companies as a means to new opportunities for growth. So rather than hearing about Sega being merged with another company, we could hear more about Sega taking on new companies. Overall, the future looks bright for Sega as we recently reported in the same interview that the company is seeking new revivals.

A massive collection of classic IPs could be given a new lease on life. Just how these games will do with a modern release is yet to be seen, but we might soon see a new boom for Sega filled with incredible releases. But for now, we’ll simply have to wait and see just what exactly Sega opts to bring out next.
