Has Ubisoft Secretly Delayed Star Wars Outlaws?

October 26, 2023 by Todd Black

An even LONGER time ago in a galaxy far, far away?

With 2023 starting to get wrapped up, all eyes are slowly moving to 2024, where we’ll get new games to be hyped about. Whether it’s big AAA titles or games that hope to start new franchises, there is already plenty to look forward to. For example, Ubisoft shocked many people when it announced Star Wars Outlaws during several gaming special events in June. The game will be an original story starring the smuggler Kay Vess, but it’s set during the period of the original movies. The game looks good and seems to be rather expansive with what you can do in it. However, its release date was only given as “2024.”

However, Ubisoft dropped a financial report today about the successes in the current fiscal year. Apparently, they decided to delay the launch of a certain “large game” to the next fiscal year, which wouldn’t start until April 2024:

“The overperformance in Q2 and the current positive momentum of Ubisoft’s brands build confidence for the rest of the year. The company can therefore confirm its announced guidance of strong top line growth and non-IFRS operating income of approximately €400 million, without releasing the other large game it had initially planned to launch during the last quarter of the current fiscal year,” Ubisoft’s statement revealed. “The Company has decided to launch this other large game in FY2024-25 so as to maximize its value creation.”

Now, obviously, this doesn’t confirm that Star Wars Outlaws was delayed or was the game in question. However, it would make sense for multiple reasons. One, there were reports that the game, given what we saw in June, was nearing completion and thus could be launched in early 2024. Second, it’s the only real “big game” that Ubisoft has confirmed is coming out next year. Finally, given its size and the number of planets that players will get to have fun on, it would make sense that they need a little more time to polish it out and ensure the hype is built up for it.

We’ll have to wait and see the truth, so we’ll have to take this report with a modicum of salt for now.

As for the game itself, the title will focus on Kay Vess as she attempts to get herself out of the “scoundrel” life that she’s been in for so long. That won’t be easy, given the people she’s working with and the jobs she’ll have to do to get her freedom.
