Assassin’s Creed Mirage Will Make Sure You Remember The Alamut

October 2, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

It’s a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to show Alamut to players in a whole new light.

Ubisoft has revealed in a new interview that they made it a point to add Alamut to Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Alamut Castle is a real historical fortress, originally built by a Zaydi Shi’a ruler called Wahsūdān ibn Marzubān. It became an important military stronghold in ancient Persia, when it fell into the hands of Hassan-i Sabbah, the historical founder of the Order of Assassins.

Of course, it is a major location in the world of Assassin’s Creed. Mirroring real life history, the Assassin’s Creed version of Alamut became the capital of the Assassin order. But prior to that, it was built on top of a temple of the First Civilization. Altair and Edward Kenway have been to Alamut, but Assassin’s Creed Mirage brings a special opportunity to Ubisoft.

Ubisoft may have had to twist the history a bit, but they will make it so that Basim can visit Alamut while it’s still being built.

In an interview with GamesRadar, narrative director Sarah Beaulieu explained that she had to fight to make this happen:

“I fought for Alamut even though the producer was not happy about it. It was an opportunity to pay homage to the franchise.

The Alamut is big in the Assassin’s Creed lore, and I think the community would have been very sad if we had missed that opportunity.”

Beaulieu also explained that they have added to the lore, as fans will find out when they get to playing it:

“People who know Assassin’s Creed know what is in Alamut and what it is, but we’ve added some stuff, we’ve created some new stuff – new levels of information about Alamut – and also rethought some of the information that people have on Alamut.

We decided to re-engineer the whole assassin’s branch so it blends with what came before with Bayek and what will come later with Altaïr. [We wanted to] try to make sense of all of the costumes, ranks, traditions, and show – for the first time – the assassin’s boot camp.

It’s more than just three or four assassins in training, it’s a small village of people who believe in the Creed but aren’t able to kill stealthily. Bringing that to life was just our prelude take on the franchise.”

Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released on October 5, 2023, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Windows via Epic Game Store and Ubisoft Connect. It will not be available on Steam, at least at launch.
