Netflix Vice President Is Considering AAA Stranger Things Game

May 22, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

A new Stranger Things game for fans could be in the works.

Stranger Things is a massive franchise, and it’s instantly gained fans worldwide. The Netflix exclusive series is a science fiction horror drama set in a fictional rural town called Hawkins in Indiana. The show is set during the 1980s, with the story’s focus centered around a young girl named Eleven who uses supernatural abilities to help fight back hostile creatures from a parallel world.

Each new season introduces us to new horrifying creatures that seek to take over our world. Fighting back against these beasts is Eleven and her friends, but we know that the series is wrapping up. So we’re moving on to the last season of the mainline show, and with it comes plenty of disheartening fans whose favorite series concludes. But it looks like we might have a new game in the works that could help keep this IP alive and well.

Thanks to a report from Gamesradar, we’re finding out that the latest issue of Edge Magazine features a conversation with Netflix vice president and head of external games, Leanne Loombe. During their conversation, it was noted that there are a couple of Stranger Things video games in the works. However, these games were dialed back to be more retro-inspired, as even Leanne Loombe notes that they haven’t created the game for Stranger Things yet.

Leanne stated that as they build up the muscles to launch more games, they want to increase the scope as they attempt to make more complex and AAA-type experiences. This would come not only from their internal studios but external studios as well. For example, while not directly stating that a big-budget Stranger Things game is in the works, it’s one of the IPs noted that they feel could make a solid video game experience.

As we build up the muscles to launch more games, and we learn more things, then we are naturally going to move into higher scope, more complex, AAA-type experiences, across both internal and external [studios]. We have IPs that we thing could work well in games, but then it’s about really figuring out ‘ok, what kind of game is that – how would that feel and play? You know, the Stranger Things games that we’ve got, for example, they’re great games, but I don’t think we’ve done the Stranger Things game yet – the one that is authentically connected to that universe and those characters that the fans love.

Leanne Loombe – Edge Magazine

What a big AAA Stranger Things game would look like and entail remains a mystery for now. But for such a massive IP, it would certainly drive plenty of interest if Netflix opted to attempt a big video game project that was connected to this series.
