MLG Joins January 18 Blackout to Protest SOPA

January 13, 2012 by Josh Harmon

All the sites in the MLG network will be down from 8AM to 8PM ET, replaced by a information about the bill and the dangers it poses to the gaming community.

Earlier this month, Major League Gaming moved more than 100 of its registered domains off of GoDaddy in response to that company's public support of SOPA, the controversial anti-piracy legislation currently being considered by the U.S. Congress. Now MLG has gone one step further, announcing that all sites in their network will be participating in the January 18 blackout designed to raise awareness about the bill.

"MLG will be participating in the blackout on January 18th from 8:00AM  to 8:00PM ET," reads a statement on their official site. "All the sites in our network will be down during that time, and in their place will be a short message with additional information about SOPA to help educate our community members about the bill and what it could mean for them."

The January 18 blackout was first spearheaded by social-media site Reddit, whose founders and admins oppose SOPA on the grounds that the far-reaching bill will threaten to kill user-generated content on the Web.

The movement has since garnered the support of other high-profile communities, including the Cheezburger Network, Destructoid, Minecraft developer Mojang, and MMOFPS Firefall, which will be shutting down its beta servers for the duration of the event.
