I’m not someone who knows a whole lot about art, so it’s pretty rare for me to get an art reference. Pieta Game Over, however, is an exception.
The sculpture, which is based on Michelangelo's Pieta (found in St Peter’s Basilica, in the Vatican City,) gives the famous work of art a Mario twist. While the original sculpture is known for realistic and almost incomprehensible detail right down to Mary’s expression as she cradles her son, the Mario version is a little more simple and less likely to be kept behind bullet proof glass.
The work of Kordian Lewandowski, the statue is about the size of the artist and a little more simple than it’s precursor. While Michelangelo’s Pieta was carved from marble, Pieta Game Over has been carved from polystyrene… which is actually quite impressive in itself.
While Pieta Game Over is unlikely to find itself subject to the hordes of visitors in prayer that the original does, it’s even less likely to find itself attacked with a hammer by a crazy Geologist screaming ‘I am Jesus Christ,’ which is probably a good thing.
