Sonic Frontiers Sold Over 2.5 Million Copies Worldwide

December 13, 2022 by Ophelie Castelot

That’s a lot of rings collected.

Sega announced that Sonic Frontiers crossed an important milestone, as the latest entry in Sonic’s adventures sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. This impressive sales number comes a little over a month after the initial release of the game, as Sonic Frontiers came out on November 8 to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

Sonic Frontiers is the latest installment in the popular blue Hedgehog game series. This platformer takes place in the mysterious Starfall Islands, an archipelago comprising of five islands filled with various biomes, including dense forests, grass fields, deserts, beaches, and mountains.

At the beginning of the game, Sonic is separated from his friends Tails and Amy Rose after the three heroes fall through a wormhole. The Hedgehog has to collect the Chaos Emerald spread throughout the Starfall Islands, discover the mysteries surrounding this archipelago, and save his friends. Completing the entire game takes between 20 and 30 hours on average, which gives plenty of time for Sonic to collect rings and run around.

Unlike previous entries in the series, Sonic Frontiers features a semi-open world to discover. Players are no longer restricted by the narrative and can roam around the Starfall Islands at their own pace. The open-zone design of Sonic Frontiers removes the traditional tracks and timers from earlier installments in the franchise, expanding on the 3D platform action gameplay from previous games in the Sonic series.

This open-zone formula was well received by fans, as Sonic Frontiers sold over 2.5 million copies in about a month. This milestone further improves the position of Sonic the Hedgehog as one of the most popular video game franchises of all time, selling a total of over 1.5 billion copies worldwide since the release of the first Sonic game in 1991 for the Sega Genesis.

While Sonic Frontiers brought several new mechanics to the game, it also kept the core values of the franchise. Sonic has to collect various elements thanks to his signature speed and use several abilities to solve puzzles, defeat his opponents, and make his way to victory. The Hedgehog can grind along rails and run even faster with abilities such as Quick Step, Jump Dash, and Spin Jump. Once he gathered enough energy, Sonic can also dash forward with a short burst of speed with the Boost ability.

Sonic Frontiers is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
