Forget DRM, Serious Sam 3 Punishes Pirates with an Invincible Scorpion

December 7, 2011 by Josh Harmon

Anyone with a less than legitimate copy of the game are in for a funny surprise. Well, funny for us, at least.

When your game is as manly as Serious Sam 3, traditional DRM schemes just aren't going to cut it. Disc check? Too weak. SecuROM? Positively girly. Always-on Internet connection? Might as well send the pirates a nice flower arrangement while you're at it.

Nope, Croteam opted for something a bit more befitting their hero's rough and tumble attitude: an invincible, super-fast scorpion dual-wielding assualt rifles. As you can see from the above video, ol' Scorpy's equal parts terrifying, hysterical, and awesome. While this isn't the first DRM scheme of its kind — Earthbound was making bootlegs more difficult way back in '94 — it's good to see that Croteam has a sense of humor when it comes to this sort of thing.

Like all anti-piracy measures, it's only a matter of time until someone from the dark corners of the Internet manages to crack it, but in the meantime, we can all sit back and laugh, knowing that somewhere out there, some poor pirate is getting ripped to shreds by the manliest DRM in gaming history.
