We know it may be challenging, but let’s talk about the Mortal Kombat movie from a little while back. Mortal Kombat 2 is coming soon. The first film promised to reboot the beloved franchise in movie form for the first time in decades. Yes, there were internet-only attempts to reboot the franchise, but they fell apart. The new film brought many fan-favorite characters into the mix while also cranking up the brutality to a level that the previous two mainline films never could’ve achieved. The results were mixed, though. The Fatalities were incredible, and everything fans could’ve hoped they look like. Plus, seeing a variety of characters right off the bat was great.
In one movie, we had Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Goro, Sonya Blade, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kano, Reptile, Milenna, Shang Tsung, Jax, and more. It was great! The problem was the quality of the plot was lacking. As many noted, the movie dragged at times, rewrote the lore in ways that were a bit contrived, and there was no tournament. They talked about the tournament all the time, but they didn’t go to it or participate in it, which confused many people.
However, with Mortal Kombat 2, we might get the changes fans want. Mechad Brooks played Jax in the first movie and had some cool moments with his cybernetic arms. While doing press for another show he’s on; he noted that the upcoming sequel would do big things for Jax:
“I’ve heard some pretty exciting updates,” Brooks noted. “Nothing I can get into in great detail at this very moment, but expect to see Jax back, new and improved and with these motherf—ers working.”
Based on his words, not only will Jax be back, but his arms might have some upgrades. That is a stark contrast to the movie Mortal Kombat Annihilation where Jax had to find “inner strength” and shed his metal arms to achieve victory. The question is, who will he go up against in the second film to show off his new arms powers? We don’t know yet, as details on the sequel are a bit light.
The big hope is about the tournament. The team behind the movie said that they have a trilogy planned. In their own words, it’d be “Before the tournament, the tournament, and after the tournament.” If this holds, the sequel would be the warriors of Earth Realm coming together to fight off Shang Tsung’s army in the tournament and save their home. Then, if the movie does well, the third film will likely witness the arrival of Shao Khan as he tries to take Earth Realm anyway.
If nothing else, fans are hoping Mortal Kombat 2 will deliver more epic fight scenes, and a more coherent plot, so that they can enjoy the film without worrying too much about the original film’s issues.
