Sega Acquires Three Ring Design Studio

November 17, 2011 by Addison Langford

Sega makes a smart business decision in purchasing Three Ring Design Studio.

Sega used to be one of my favorite game companies growing up. Over the years Sega and I have grown apart, but with Sonic Generations out we may be rekindling our romance. Sega has made another good move it seems, in acquiring Three Rings Design.

Three Rings Design is the studio that created Puzzle Pirates as well as the MMO Spiral Knights. Spiral Knights won the Game Developers Choice Online Award for Best Online Game Design. It sounds like this may have been an excellent decision that Sega has made. Sega says this acquisition was part of their desire to move more into digital space.

The studio will continue to focus on their award winning Spiral Knights game for now as well as continue to work on their MMO based off of the BBC series Doctor Who (DO WANT.) I’m super interested to see what Sega does with this team and what new ideas they come up with. Best of luck to them!
