Cyberpunk 2077 Teases Its Own Future with a New Night City Wire

September 2, 2022 by Ryan Parreno

It turns out CD Projekt RED’s game about the future is going to have a future after all.

The official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account has revealed an upcoming Night City Wire, where they will discuss both the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners show, and the future of the futuristic open-world game Cyberpunk 2077.

The Night City Wire is a series of promotional videos for Cyberpunk 2077 hosted by Hollie Bennett. The series was conceived to fuel promotion for the game, as its incoming release had the luck to coincide with the opening months of the pandemic, with the game conventions for that year getting canceled in rapid order. The Night City Wires would run for five episodes and would go on to be popular in their own right.

In the bigger picture of the Cyberpunk 2077 franchise, this is a surprising, possibly hopeful, development for the community that has embraced the game. While Cyberpunk 2077 sold over 18 million units, its disastrous release led to bad reviews, a staggering amount of refunds, and a ruined reputation for fan favorite studio CD Projekt RED. The fallout from this release was so strong that CDPR is now a fraction of what it was originally worth when compared to before the game was released.

CDPR definitely originally had bigger plans for Cyberpunk 2077 before its release, with one of its spinoff projects being the Netflix anime series Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Produced by Netflix and animated by Trigger, the ten-episode ONA (original net animation) is going to release this coming September 13, 2022.

So CD Projekt RED isn’t quite done promoting Cyberpunk Edgerunners, but they seem interested in reviving interest in the franchise as a whole. For those true believers who stuck by the game, they would be aware that many of its launch issues have been addressed. While Cyberpunk 2077 still isn’t quite up to what CDPR originally promised in their initial PR push, it’s at a good enough state that its current players seem satisfied.

Prior to this announcement, CDPR had been mum about Cyberpunk 2077, and seemed ready to move on as they had new projects ongoing with their main video game franchise, The Witcher. They already have a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X release of The Witcher 3 planned for the end of this year. They are also currently hard at work on The Witcher 4, with that game’s research phase already completed.

With all that said, we don’t entirely know what CD Projekt RED is going to announce. Will there be a new DLC for Cyberpunk 2077? Are they planning releases on new platforms, such as a cloud version for the Nintendo Switch? Could they be working on live-action projects to complement Cyberpunk Edgerunner, like a movie or series?

Would you welcome any new Cyberpunk projects? Or have you been burned out from the past few years and have lost interest?

The next Cyberpunk 2077 Night City Wire is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at 5 PM CEST.
