Square Enix has confirmed they are shutting down their cloud service technologies service, Shinra Technologies, a little over a year after it was announced.
While the fictional Shinra of Final Fantasy was an overreaching corporation that had to be taken down again and again, the real life Shinra is only undergoing closure once, and the reasons are more mundane, if unfortunate.
In a press release, Square Enix explained that they could not find third party investors interested in keeping the business alive, and so they have no choice but to shut it down.
Shinra seemed to be a promising cloud service, that would have powered Square Enix’s online games, such as Final Fantasy XIV. Square was also planning to lease the service out to other game companies.
Square Enix has more immediate and real concerns. They will be taking a loss from this closure of two billion yen for this coming financial year, ending March 31, 2016. Hopefully, none of Square’s ongoing projects will be affected by this severe hit.
