Joystick-controlled Weapons Used Against Taliban

October 10, 2011 by Mat Growcott

Soldiers play Call of Duty off-duty, use Joystick-controlled CROWS while on-duty

That feeling of fighting virtual terrorists while playing the latest shooter is probably a little closer to the real thing than you'd think, especially when the real thing includes something like the CROWS system. CROWS, which stands for Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station, is an armoured truck attached with a .50 calibre machine gun, capable of shooting 4 miles. The machine gun is controlled via a joystick and a TV screen.

"A lot of guys compare it to Call of Duty," Sergeant John Henington said when Physorg spoke with them. That's no mistake, however, as more and more warfare technology is being designed with young soldiers in mind – young soldiers who are extremely confident with a controller in their hands.

To hear about things like this is both amazing and disconcerting. We're becoming more and more disconnected from the battle and, as sci-fi becomes reality – something that's happening at an almost alarming rate – how long is it until anybody named Sarah Conner REALLY needs to watch her back?
