Blizzard Talks the Evolution of Overwatch’s Progression System

December 17, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Early versions of the progression system didn’t work.

Blizzard has released a new Overwatch development video, looking at the game's progression system.

In the video, game director Jeff Kaplan discusses how the system has evolved and offers insight into how it's changed, as well as why Blizzard's early attempts didn't work as well as hoped.

Speaking in a recent interview, Kaplan said, “Unlike World of Warcraft or Diablo, where the progression is one of the main motivating factors in those games, whether it be what your level is or your gear, Overwatch is different in that sense,” Kaplan explained. “We don’t want the progression system to be burdensome in the fact that it’s telling you what to do or how to play.”

Instead of rewarding players with "better guns" or "more hitpoints," Overwatch's progression system will focus on cosmetic rewards and customisation.
