Starfield Introduces Bethesda’s Biggest Ever City In New Atlantis

June 14, 2022 by Alexandra Nicholson

We’re going to need to switch on our GPS.

Although we’re all still reeling from that big Starfield reveal during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase on Sunday, details are still emerging about the game’s cityscapes. Frankly, there’s a lot to take in, which seems to be the overriding theme of this game. Thanks to an interview with IGN, Bethesda Head Honcho and Starfield Game Director Todd Howard has shared some more information about the game’s big cities.

According to Todd, Starfield’s main city will be called New Atlantis and is apparently bigger than any of the cities in any of Bethesda’s previous games. New Atlantis will serve as the hub for the Constellation faction, the game’s main chain of command, and viewers were treated to another look at the city during the Xbox Games Showcase Extended event earlier today. You can watch the replay of that event below, but the Starfield deeper dive is around 50 minutes in.

The interview with Howard in IGN also revealed that the game’s main questline is expected to take between 30 and 40 hours to complete, and will be located in large part in the sprawling city of New Atlantis. The game will feature four main cities altogether, presumably located on one or two of the over 1,000 planets that were revealed to be featuring in Starfield during Sunday’s presentation.

Needless to say, the gaming community has had a lot of thoughts on Starfield. The vast majority of them are overwhelmingly positive and excited, but some have raised questions about the promised scale of the game, and whether or not the inclusion of a procedurally generated galaxy system will give the Bethesda game the typical handcrafted feel of previous Bethesda games. On that, we’ll just have to wait and see. However, it’s clear that the hype is really kicking into gear around this game ahead of its expected release in 2023.
