PlayStation Vita’s 3G Downloads Capped at 20 MB

October 3, 2011 by Josh Harmon

If you’re not using Wi-Fi, downloads on Sony’s new handheld will have to be fairly small.

In an interview with Japanese site ASCII, a SCEJ spokesperson has revealed that the PlayStation Vita’s 3G downloads will be capped at 20 MB per file.

The move is not an unexpected one, as many 3G-compatible devices institute similar restrictions to prevent undue stress on the network. Sony says they’re open to raising the limit at some point in the future, though it seems unlikely they’ll ever be removing it outright.

The rep also stated that 3G users will still be able to access the PlayStation Store to make purchases, though it's not entirely clear from his statement whether store downloads will be exempt from the cap.

Additionally, Sony will be working closely with developers to ensure that bandwidth-intensive multiplayer games will still be playable over a 3G connection, even with its limited 128 Kbps download/64 Kbps upload speeds.

The handheld will only be offering 3G support on its more expensive, $299 model. A Wi-Fi only model will cost $249.

The PlayStation Vita will be launching in Japan on December 17, with the rest of the world getting the device sometime in 2012.
