Thor Love and Thunder is aiming to do quite a bit, not the least of which is prove why Thor deserves a 4th MCU film (when Captain America and Iron Man didn’t get one). But another key thing is that they’re going to bring back Jane Foster (who wasn’t in Thor Ragnarok) and turn her into “The Mighty Thor”. The movie (as seen in the trailers) highlights the confusion and somewhat awkward situations that come from that. And last night at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, we got a clip showcasing that further.
As you can see in the clip above, Thor is in a battle setting and notices Mjolnir is around and tries to find it. But then when he does, it races back to Jane Foster, and then she goes to work. Based on the first full trailer, Thor doesn’t realize this is Jane Foster just yet, but he will soon enough.
Director Taiki Waititi noted in several interviews that it was very important for him to bring back Jane Foster and not just have her be the “girlfriend” character. Or to put it in Doctor Who terms, “the girl who waits” in regards to Thor being a superhero and then eventually coming back for her.
So Thor Love and Thunder is going to change that paradigm due to her now being a hero herself, and that’s good because Thor is going to need all the help he can get against Gorr the God Butcher. Of course, there is going to be more going on in this movie than that. We have Valkyrie’s struggle to be the All-Father of Asgard, we have the other pantheons of gods we’re going to see become the targets of Gorr, and we have the Guardians of the Galaxy being in the film for a bit.
All will be revealed though when the movie arrives in July.
