Nintendo is now openly talking about movies of their properties. Veteran developers Takashi Tezuka and Shigeru Miyamoto were not afraid to speak their mind, and their ideas are interesting, to say the least.
Regarding their most famous project, Miyamoto revealed that Mario and Luigi were originally made as twins with similar sprites to keep within memory limitations. This was presumably the case for Mario Bros, where the two appear on screen at the same time in multiplayer.
With this in mind, Miyamoto says that the brothers are supposed to be twins, so the new cast would have to be twins. Intriguingly enough, Miyamoto has nice things to say about the 1993 movie, referring to John Leguizamo as young and handsome in his role as Luigi.
And yes, once again, Miyamoto denies that there are any Mario movie projects in the works, but they are open to suggestions, as what Avi Arad had apparently been trying to pitch via Sony Pictures.
Moving on to another major property the two worked on, Tezuka may have pleasantly shocked fans with his suggestions for casting Link. He wants Link to be played by a female actress, particularly a boyish female actress.
For his part, Miyamoto says his idea of Link is someone who looks very different from how a Japanese person looks like. Miyamoto was impressed by Link cosplayers he saw in the last Japanese Expo, and thinks they would be good for the role. Miyamoto insists that whatever the case, he wants fresh faces for a Legend of Zelda film project.
