Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Will Play With Oculus VR This Spring

September 24, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

It’s a final unlikely twist to a convoluted saga.

Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey has announced that Minecraft Windows 10 Edition will get Oculus support this spring, in a final twist to a convoluted story between the two.

Luckey shared his thoughts on Minecraft, and how it aligns with Oculus’ goals of creating virtual worlds. He says playing in virtual words made him wonder what it would be like to make a metaverse, or a persistent world in VR. Now, Minecraft Windows 10 Edition is set to be the first such world with this much promise.

So, to put this in perspective, Oculus VR was widely seen as a Microsoft competitor, especially when the company revealed plans to make an AR competitor called Hololens, which even has its own analogue/competitor, Holobuilder. Minecraft too, seemed unlikely to work with Oculus, when Notch pulled his support for the product. Notch was one of many Oculus Kickstarter backers who felt cheated when they sold themselves to Facebook.

However, that was then, and that was before Notch sold Minecraft to Microsoft, and it became clear that Microsoft would not keep Minecraft exclusive to their platforms. Microsoft could have easily sold Minecraft as a Hololens only experience, but this choice still helps them, as it makes a compelling case to getMinecraft Windows 10 Edition.

On Twitter, Notch seemed more preoccupied with Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain, but he got his last word in.

My opinion on minecraft/oculus? Neato! Now, back to ignoring Quiet because D.D. obviously is much better.
