Samsung just shook up VR, mobile, and gaming for everyone with their blockbuster announcement: Consumer GearVR version 2 is coming to their Samsung 2015 lineup, for just $ 99. It launches with their latest lineup in November 2015, and it will be usable worldwide.
This is the device that will take virtual reality mainstream and deliver a virtual reality for everyone, said Samsung senior vice president Peter Koo.
GearVR use Samsung phones for display, processor, and some motion sensing. This 2015 model will be 22 percent lighter than its previous iteration and offer improvements to the touchpad on the side of the head.
Samsung seems sincere about making this the most mainstream push for VR, as Netflix VR is launching for GearVR today, with Hulu, Vimeo, and TiVo following soon.
GearVR isn’t Oculus, PlayStation VR, or Vive, but it has the potential to reach a wider market than all three based on price alone.
