Just one day after the Vancouver, BC-based indie developer IronOak Games launched their Kickstarter for cooperative, turn-based, roguelike RPG For the King, it has surpassed its initial funding goal of $30,210 USD and still has 29 days to go.
As seen in the teaser trailer below, For the King uses low polygon count art due to the small staff at IronOak Games. This enables the team to add new assets, characters, and more fairly quickly and easily, something that was necessary for a development studio the size of IronOak Games.
As the story goes, players in For the King are everyday citizens of Fahrul who have taken up the Queen’s call to “rise up and help stem the tide of impending doom” now that the King has been assassinated by an unknown assailant. The game uses a party-based system that is common to RPGs, but allows for co-op play where each player controls an individual party member. Procedural generation and roguelike elements allow for a new experience each time the game is loaded up.
The three classes currently in the game are The Hunter, The Scholar, and The Blacksmith. Each class brings certain attributes to the party that other classes don’t. Alternatively, each class also has weaknesses that other classes in the party should make up for.
As of this writing, For the King sits at $34,910 USD raised so far with 29 days remaining in the Kickstarter campaign. Backer rewards include a digital copy of the game, closed beta access, exclusive in-game hat skins, your name in the credits, and more.
