Halo 5: Guardians Will Run at a Dynamic Resolution to Maintain 60 FPS

September 14, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

In order to balance visual effects with a consistent frame rate.

Halo 5: Guardians’ resolution will dynamically scale to the needs of any given scene in order to maintain a constant, locked 60 frames per second, studio head Josh Holmes shared in a post on Xbox Wire.

“60fps gameplay is supported by a new progressive resolution system that allows us to dynamically scale the resolution at which we render the game (up to 1080p) based on the needs of the scene,” Holmes wrote. “This enables us to deploy resources where they have most impact across a diverse series of experiences throughout the game while delivering the most visually stunning Halo game ever.”

The multiplayer beta for Halo 5: Guardians that was held last December ran at 720p and while 343 Industries noted that the game will run at a higher resolution in its final form, it did not guarantee 1080p resolution.

"In much of the campaign you may be playing at 1080p, but when we want to get really crazy with vehicles, visual effects and combat we can trade some of the resolution in order to maintain the crucial 60fps," said campaign environment art lead Justin Dinges.

"Without this system, we would need to either reduce the scale of our most intense combat encounters or lower the quality of content across the game in order to stay at 60fps at all times. With progressive resolution, we get the best of both worlds: epic scale experiences that look incredible while running at a consistent 60fps."

Today’s news in regards to resolution and frame rate was only discussed as it relates to the game’s campaign mode. Whether or not this dynamic resolution will apply to multiplayer as well remains to be seen.

Halo 5: Guardians will be released on Oct. 27 exclusively on Xbox One. The game’s story places players in the shoes of the hero Master Chief, as well as Agent Locke, who has been tasked with finding and apprehending Chief. Check out the opening cinematic of the game here.
