If you were to list out the shows that have made a massive impact on pop culture, you might only think about live-action ones at first, but in truth, animated series have made just as big an impact. And one of the biggest by far is that of Batman TAS. Yes, the animated series from the 90s transformed Batman lore and culture for the better. Proving just how grand an animated series can look, sound, and be its own unique thing. It was the one that made Mr. Freeze a sympathetic villain, put Mark Hamill as the Joker, was the birthplace of Harley Quinn, and so on.
Another thing it did (as proven by Harley Quinn) was not being afraid to introduce new characters to try and shake things up. And now, after decades since being created, another character from the show has made their debut in the comics via the newly released Catwoman #43. Her name…is Red Claw.
For those that don’t remember, Red Claw was the leader of a terrorist organization, and one who was more than willing to not just fight Batman one-on-one, but to do as much damage she could to the world in pursuit of her cause.
Bruce Timm, one of the main creators on Batman TAS, said in the DVD commentary for the episode she debuted in said that he was shocked she hadn’t made the leap to the comics world. Well, now she has! We won’t spoil how she debuts, mainly because there isn’t that much to it as of yet, but the fact that they’re finally delving into her, and putting her up against Selina Kyle, is enough to give fans of the show something to cheer over.
And who knows? If her comics debut resonates? Maybe she’ll appear in live-action or another animated series before too long.
